Oakdale’s busiest intersection, where highways 108 and 120 meet, was closed for several hours Friday morning after an armed man was detained and there were reports of a second person holed up in an RV.
People began calling 911 around 10:10 a.m. to report the RV was being driven erratically and running red lights as it headed west on F street toward the center of town, according to Sgt. Andrew Stever.
When police arrived, they saw the RV stopped at the northwest corner of the intersection, and found a man in the area carrying a concealed firearm.
They also found a young boy, who appeared to be disoriented, Stever said. The boy was safely removed from the scene. Police believe he is connected to the man who was detained but they didn’t know how as of early Friday afternoon.
Around that time, two other people Stever said were somehow involved in the incident, told officers there was another person inside the RV armed with a long gun.
More officers responded and an armored truck was used to pull up alongside the RV.
On a PA system, officers tried to coax the occupants out, and also used less-than-lethal devices, which broke the RVs windows. Stever didn’t know what type of devices were used but people in the area reported hearing loud bangs.
At about 12:30 p.m., officers entered the RV. They found a rifle but no one was inside.
Stever did not have information about the man who was detained, including his name or what charges he is facing.
We will have more on this story, including video from the scene, later today.
