Honda Ridgeline

With crossover SUVs and pickup trucks more popular than ever, Honda combines the two genres with the innovative 2020 Ridgeline. Sure, it can’t tow as much as its mid-size rivals and looks like a minivan with a truck bed bolted on to the rear end. However, the Honda’s cabin is better built and more roomy than anything else in its class. Likewise, its cargo bed can handle traditional chores and offers unconventional features thanks to an in-bed trunk and available audio system. It also demonstrates an uncanny athleticism and a superb ride quality that makes it enjoyable during daily use. While the 2020 Ridgeline is often ostracized by pickup purists, it should be glorified by everyone else who wants a truck.

Chevy Colorado

The 2020 Colorado is a four-wheeled shape-shifter, with the ability to adapt and excel to most any task you set before it. There are two cab sizes and two cargo-bed lengths and several engine choices. The base engine is a four-cylinder; optional engines include a peppy V-6 and a fuel-efficient, class-exclusive diesel. And when equipped with that diesel, the Colorado can tow a class-best 7700 pounds. Its Tonka-truck chunky looks and outstanding infotainment system are offset by an interior composed of cheap-feeling materials and limited driver-assistance technology. Even so, the Colorado is a versatile truck that meets the needs of a wide range of buyers.

GMC Canyon

With flexible cab and bed configurations and four-cylinder and V-6 engines, the 2020 Canyon provides the best versatility in the midsize-truck market. As with its corporate stablemate, the Chevy Colorado, the Canyon is available in extended- and crew-cab configurations and with a 5.2- or 6.2-foot bed. It also features two compelling powertrains: a spry 308-hp V-6 and an efficient diesel four-cylinder; a gas four-cylinder is also offered, but we don’t recommend it. The top version is the Denali, which features a stylish interior and exterior. However, even when fully equipped at more than $50,000, the Canyon is missing increasingly common driver-assistance features. Still, if you’re looking for a smaller alternative to a full-size truck, the Canyon should be a top consideration.

Jeep Gladiator

The 2020 Gladiator picks up where the brand’s last cargo-bed-carrying model—the Comanche—left off in the early ’90s. Based on the legendary Wrangler, the pickup truck pairs a four-door cab with a five-foot box and an obligatory batch of serious off-road equipment. The latter includes large off-road tires, a sturdy suspension, and standard four-wheel drive. While a diesel-powered V-6 will arrive eventually, only a gasoline version is currently available on this Jeep. Still, the Gladiator represents a unique entry among mid-size pickup trucks and earned a spot on our 2020 10Best list. Its unmistakably rugged exterior and removable body panels make it an extremely stylish and versatile mode of transportation.

Ford Ranger

The 2020 Ranger is a tough customer when you need it to be and a smooth operator when it matters most. Its engine offers refined power delivery while providing the muscular towing and payload capabilities that make trucks a must-have for some buyers. Trim levels range from the stripped-down XL to the spruced-up Lariat, and there are two body styles and two bed lengths to consider. If you choose the lean, lightweight XL trim, you’ll enjoy a pickup offering acceleration that’s among the quickest in its segment. Base models come equipped with active safety features that competing models reserve solely for top-dog trim levels.

Ram 1500

Easy to drive despite its size, the 2020 Ram 1500 is versatile and competitively capable. Redesigned for 2019, this half-ton pickup truck now wears sleek bodywork and can be equipped with an interior that rivals many luxury-brand SUVs for plushness, without compromising its ability to do real work. The Ram’s smooth riding coil-spring suspension tops all rivals, and optional air springs at all four corners do even better regardless of load. The choices of drivetrains and equipment make it easy to find a version suited to weekend household chores, off-road fun, or serious towing and hauling. The Ram 1500 isn’t just a great truck, it’s a great vehicle, and that’s why we named it to our 2020 10Best list.

Ford F-150

Pickup trucks have morphed into luxury cruise machines, and the 2020 F-150 has not fallen behind the curve. Sure, Ford will still build you a work truck with a regular cab and an 8.0-foot bed, but the most popular versions are the family-friendly four-door trucks with shorter beds. There’s an extended cab, too, for the folks who blend work and play. With a wide range of engines and driveline combinations, there is an F-150 for nearly any budget. Unlike the competition that uses mostly steel in its construction, Ford fashions all of its pickup body panels out of aluminum. Ford even makes an in-house desert proto-racer called the Raptor (reviewed separately).

Ford F-150 Raptor

The 2020 F-150 Raptor owns the road—and pretty much anywhere else you drive it—thanks to its big all-terrain tires, lane-filling stance, and widened F-150 body. The Raptor’s long-travel suspension gives it both awesome off-road capability and impressive ride comfort. Its 450-hp twin-turbo V-6 and 10-speed automatic transmission can shoot it to 60 mph in as little as 5.1 seconds. While its massive dimensions make it a bear to maneuver in tight quarters, it also can roll over pesky parking curbs with ease. Compared with conventional full-size pickups, the Raptor is on a whole other level—mixing serious capability and pure, dumb fun like no other.

Ford Super Duty

The 2020 Super Duty lineup represents the pinnacle of the company’s pickup-truck capabilities and technology. From the F-250 to the F-350 and all the way up to the F-450, these heavy-duty behemoths are built to tow substantial loads and even double as family transportation. The most basic versions are perfect for tradesmen and the fanciest trims are fit for business executives. There’s no shortage of horsepower and torque with any of its three available V-8 engines—which are highlighted by the most powerful diesel on the market. Ford sweetens the deal by offering a host of driver-assistance features and a robust infotainment system.

Ram 2500 / 3500

The 2020 Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickup trucks are all about extreme towing, hauling, and comfort. With a new, stronger frame and powerful standard 6.2-liter V-8 engine, this wide and award-winning range of rigs can handle everything from dirty jobs to family trips. What’s more, both versions offer the best interior in the segment with luxury-car details and an impressive list of tech features. These are not only the quietest, most comfortable, and most refined heavy-duty pickups Ram has ever made, they’re also the most powerful. The brand’s legendary Cummins diesel engine packs 1000 lb-ft of torque—more than its heavy-duty competitors Chevy and GMC.
